Sleep Hygiene and Pain Management
Have you ever heard of the term sleep hygiene? It is a term that describes how important it is to put yourself in the best position to sleep and rest every night, and for pain management and treatment, it means we need to prioritize sleep in our lives.
Sleep plays an important role in the management of all chronic pain: back pain, knee pain, leg pain, ankle pain, tennis elbow, headaches, migraines neuropathy, etc. Most adults need around 8 hours of sleep a night to function well during waking hours. Chronic lack of sleep also increases the risk of obesity by changing the level of certain hormones. Dealing with chronic pain is no fun, adding sleep deprivation makes life even more challenging as a chronic pain patient.
Your sleeping environment is very important. Generally, a cooler environment is recommended for better sleep. Turning the tv off and putting down the phone can be very helpful. I would recommend reading a book, a warm bath, or warm milk to help you fall asleep faster. This can be trying when traveling for the Holidays and having guests. Just remember your health is important and make sure you get plenty of sleep, especially if you suffer with chronic pain.
